The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet in New Delhi ahead of the Election Commission’s ban on redrawing administrative units from January
The notification was issued but the Assam Chief Minister said it was a “temporary” measure and the government could reconsider the decision only after the demarcation process was completed.
“We have decided to merge the four districts in the greater interest of Assam and to fight against caste, land and foundation and strengthen administrative power,” Sharma told reporters at Assam House in Delhi. “Bishwanath district will merge Sonitpur , Hojai with Nagaon, Bajali with Barpeta and Tamulpur with Baksa.
“I am not personally happy, but the decision was not taken for personal or party gain. Such a tough decision was inevitable in the interest of the country, society and administration.
